How To Decide Which URL Redirect To Use

So when in doubt, lean towards utilizing 301 redirects by default for any core site migrations or redirects needed long-term. And reserve 302s only for the temporary, short-lifespan cases like promotions or maintenance. That way you can avoid unpredictability and keep your essential site redirects working for, not against your search visibility.



How To Setup A URL Redirect On Your Website


One of the most straightforward ways to set up 301 redirects is by adding rules to your site's .htaccess file. This takes care of redirecting at the web server level.


To move an entire website domain to a new home, add a single broad .htaccess rule:


Redirect 301 / http://www.new-website.com/


Just swap out the new target domain. This will permanently redirect all pages and traffic from the old site to its new location seamlessly.


For individual URL redirects from one page to another, the syntax looks like this instead:


Redirect 301 /old-page.html http://www.mywebsite.com/new-page


So the old URL gets entered after the 301 status code, and the fully qualified destination URL goes after it surrounded by quotes.


Using .htaccess is an easy way to implement site-wide or individual page 301 redirects without needing special software or coding expertise. Just add a new redirect line for each originating URL you want to redirect. This keeps redirect management centralized in one place.
